Canje’s Bold Expansion: Custom Fabrication Meets Caribbean Soul in Austin

When Emmer & Rye Hospitality, the award-winning team behind Canje, set out to expand their vibrant East Austin restaurant, they turned to us. The goal? Transform a former post office into a seamless extension of one of Austin’s most talked-about dining destinations.

At 4th Edition Design, we specialize in custom fabrication and architectural millwork that brings restaurants and commercial spaces to life. This project pushed us to think creatively—merging bold design, functionality, and craftsmanship into a truly one-of-a-kind build.

A Full-Scope Custom Build in a Non-Traditional Space

Working with an old post office required us to get inventive. To warm up the industrial bones of the space and create visual continuity with the original Canje, we fabricated and installed a range of custom elements, including:

  • Baseboards throughout the space to polish and define the new interiors

  • Burlap-wrapped panels suspended from the rafters, softening the ceiling and concealing structural remnants of the old post office

  • A brand new custom bar, designed as the visual and social anchor of the expanded dining area

  • Cabinetry for the DJ booth and server station, blending utility with Canje’s distinct design language

  • Handcrafted pine dining tables, built for durability and warmth, with a casual elegance that invites long meals and conversation

  • A 400-pound sliding barn door, engineered and installed to divide the two spaces while making a bold architectural statement

Each piece was designed to integrate seamlessly with the existing Canje aesthetic while introducing new layers of materiality and functionality.

A Collaboration Fueled by Design and Detail

Partnering with Emmer & Rye Hospitality meant building for both beauty and performance—creating pieces that could withstand the rigors of high-volume service while maintaining a polished, welcoming feel. We worked closely with Baldridge Architects to align construction details with the architectural intent, translating the vision into a real-world form.

Our shop handled every detail with precision—from joinery and finishing to on-site installation. The result is a space that feels like it’s always been part of Canje, but with its heartbeat and energy.
